I have always taken the Great Lakes for granted, but never again. My family vacationed often at Point Pelee on Lake Erie, I regularly accompanied my uncle salmon fishing on Lake Huron, annually visited Chicago looking out on Lake Michigan, and traveled to see cousins in Duluth, MN on Lake Superior. When I asked about regional identity, “rust belt” was just not part of the thinking, it’s always been about the lakes.
