While working as the Data & Design Coordinator at the Detroit Health Department I developed a guide for staff and external partners about communicating with data. The content was summarized from resources including the CDC’s free online training about communicating with numbers, charts, and graphs as well as related publications and research that demonstrate best practices in cognitive information literacy. During my time I quickly found that when it came to data there was no real difference between “the public” and “policymakers” – both needed the same level of clear communication with data.
