As a former employee of local public health in local government I was fascinated by the uptick in resolutions being passed by city councils and county boards to declare that “racism is a public health crisis.” Many of the resolutions were passed as a result of the murder of George Floyd and the resulting police violence. Other resolutions were spurred on by the disparities in cases and deaths from COVID-19. Many resolutions cited both police violence and COVID-19 as the reason to take steps to assess and improve processes in local government.
