Detroit had not hosted a GIS Day since the 1990s. I started teaching Intro to GIS at Wayne State University and felt that the city needed to lift up its history of mapping the city and innovating spatial representations of information. The COVID-19 pandemic made the effort a bit more difficult and I decided to bring together all of the regional universities that were doing GIS and mapping work. The program was four days of workshops and panels hosted by each university as well as local governments.
